The Coppersmith Barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus)



The coppersmith barbet is a small bird, about the size of a sparrow, and is well known for its metronomic call, which sounds like a coppersmith banging his copper plate, hence giving it its name. It is the city bird of Mumbai, a fact known by very few.

It is seen nesting in hollows of trees that it makes by itself. The second image is of one, excavating a nest for itself and Its not just the female, but even the male incubates the eggs in this species.

They are frugivores, i.e their diet consists of only fruits, berries and sometimes petals of flowers. The above two pictures were taken at Powai Lake,
