Ruddy Mongoose (Herpestes smithii)

The ruddy mongoose is a close relative to the gray mongoose, and resembles it very closely except for its black tipped tail, and the slight reddish tinge on its face and shoulders. It is widely distributed in the Indian subcontinent from Rajasthan to Kerala, and is the only mongoose species endemic to India and Sri Lanka.  They hunt small mammals or reptiles or scavenge for eggs and carrion. They are opportunistic animals, which is why they are distributed in a wide variety of habitats.

The mongoose pictured above, was taking a stroll with another mongoose, as our safari passed them in Tadoba Tiger Reserve.
